Climatologists targeted by climate deniers with hate mail, death threats
In late February, climate change denier U.S. Senator James Inhofe, R-Okla., released a list of leading climate scientists he wants prosecuted as criminals for misleading the government.
Now those scientists are receiving hate mail and death threats, reports environmental journalist Stephen Leahy for Tierramérica news service.
Stanford University of California climate scientist Stephen Schneider, one of the most respected climatologists “in the world,” has received hundreds of threatening emails, writes Leahy. Schneider told Tierramérica he believes scientists will be killed over this.
“I’m not going to let it worry me…but you know it’s going to happen,” Schneider told Tierramérica. “They shoot abortion doctors here.”
“There’s something strange in the air when a highly-respected US scientist says he or a colleague will likely be killed for saying climate change is happening,” writes Leahy on his blog at Climate Change Media Partnership. Journalist Leahy said he himself gets threats.
“I’m pretty damn angry that media companies are putting profits ahead of truth,” Schneider told Leahy. “The media are deeply broken… That’s a real threat to democracy.” Traditional media are complicit, Leahy blogged, giving ‘face time’ to those who smear scientists with nonsensical conspiracy allegations and no evidence.
